Multifaith Voices for Peace & Justice presents this fall series exploring critical election issues.
Globalization & Immigration with Raj Patel Monday, Oct. 20, 7pm First United Methodist Church, 625 Hamilton, Palo Alto
In the midst of global economic crisis, come hear Raj Patel, writer, activist, academic and author of Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System and a researcher at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, and a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley. He will speak on the connect between globalization and the root causes of immigration throughout the Americas. Keynote will be followed by responses from a multifaith panel.
Suggested donation of $5-15 for each event is requested (no one turned away for lack of funds).

"Soldiers of Conscience" Film & Discussion with Associate Producer
Wednesday, October 1, 7pm
St. Paul's United Methodist Church 405 South 10th Street, San Jose
Filmed with the permission of the US Army, this documentary tackles the question every soldier must ask - is it ever acceptable to kill another human being? Interviewing several Conscientious Objectors from the Iraq war as well as teachers at West Point, the film provides a thoughtful exploration of conscience, morality and war.
Associate Producer Ian Slattery will lead discussion and respond to Q&A following the film.
"Soldiers of Conscience" will be aired on PBS October 16th (check local listings). Don't miss this opportunity to see the film and have time for reflection with other community members and one of the Associate Producers. |

The award winning documentary "Soldiers of Conscience" will be shown on Wednesday, September 10, 7PM, at the First Baptist Church, 305 N. California Ave., Palo Alto, as the opening of the fall series, "Faithful Citizens Go to the Polls". Made with official permission from the US Army, "Soldiers of Conscience" includes never before seen footage of basic training and the war in Iraq, and interviews with a West Point ethics instructor as well as several Conscientious Objectors. Well-known author and Vietnam veteran Tobias Wolff will lead the discussion following the film. Co-director and co-producer Catherine Ryan will be present for the screening and available for Q&A. |

Eyes Wide Open, the American Friends Service Committee’s widely-acclaimed exhibition on the human cost of the Iraq War, features a pair of boots honoring each California military casualty, a labyrinth of civilian shoes to memorialize the Iraqis killed in the conflict, and a display exploring the history, cost and consequences of the war. Come to Kings' Plaza in Palo Alto (corner of Hamilton and Ramona, in front of the City Hall) to honor and grieve for the lost lives of loved ones and strangers, near and far. An ongoing vigil with the boots and shoes will begin Saturday, May 3rd at 10 a.m. and continue through the day and night until Sunday, May 4th at 6 p.m.
Special Events at the Vigil:
Opening Ceremony, Saturday, 12Noon: Prayers from Diverse Faith Traditions, Music, Speaker: Cindy Sheehan "Peace Mom" whose son Casey was killed while serving in Iraq
Taps, Saturday, 8pm (sundown) followed by time of silence
Film "Arlington West", Saturday 8:30pm: A 45 minute documentary telling the story of the "temporary cemetery in the sand" erected every Sunday by the Veterans for Peace in Santa Barbara, Santa Monica and other locations. A flag draped coffin and over 4000 wooden crosses, placed lovingly on the beach, invite the public to honor fallen U.S. soldiers and lament the cost of war.
(Bring your coats and blankets or chairs to sit on!)
Reading of Names, Sunday, 2pm: The names and ages of each of the 432 soldiers from California who have died in this war will be read, along with 432 names of Iraqi civilians who have been killed. Prayers and Silence.
Closing Ceremony, Sunday, 6pm: Speaker Gold Star Families Speak Out mother Karen Meredith, whose son Ken Ballard was killed while serving in Iraq; Prayers from Diverse Faith Traditions
The Eyes Wide Open exhibit will also be offered at Stanford White Plaza Friday, May 2, 10am-6pm and at Santa Clara University (near new library) Monday and Tuesday, May 5 & 6, 10am-8pm. |
