Description:

"Living with Violent Sacred Texts: How Jewish Thought Tries To Make the Tradition More Compassionate" will be the topic of this adult forum led by Rabbi Sheldon Lewis, author of Torah of Reconciliation and Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation Kol Emeth in Palo Alto.

Every faith carries forward problematic texts that seem uncomfortable or even unconscionable.  The texts are part of the canon and cannot be erased.  How do moderns with different sensibilities deal with such texts?  This talk will discuss how Jewish thinkers over time have grappled with very troublesome passages in the Hebrew Bible.
