Globalization & Immigration with Raj Patel

In the midst of global economic crisis, come hear Raj Patel, writer, activist, academic and author of Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System and a researcher at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, and a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley. He will speak on the connect between globalization and the root causes of immigration throughout the Americas.
Keynote will be followed by responses from a multifaith panel.

"Soldiers of Conscience" Film & Discussion led by Tobias Wolff

First Baptist Church, 305 N. California Ave., Palo Alto

Filmed with the permission of the US Army, this documentary tackles the question every soldier must ask - is it ever acceptable to kill another human being? Interviewing several Conscientious Objectors from the Iraq war as well as teachers at West Point, the film provides a thoughtful exploration of conscience, morality and war.
Tobias Wolff is a Vietnam Veteran, author, and Stanford English professor. Two of his books are based on his experience in the Special Forces during the Vietnam war, The Barracks Thief (winner of the Pen-Faulkner Award) and In Pharaoh's Army (finalist for the National Book Award).
Catherine Ryan, co-director/co-producer of the film, will also be available after the screening for Q&A.
